Juneathon-Day 9 When The Pet Peeves creep in.
Day 9 involved the gym:
I usually go to the gym pretty early in the morning because it's dead. Cardio machines might be taken but that's ok, because I head straight for the weight room.
I usually like to be alone in the weight room. Not generalizing here, but many men treat the weight room like their own personal domain and me, in my feminine skin, am an interloper. Then, like the good row in a movie theater, seats being saved everywhere. All the guys throw their towels down on all conceivable surfaces and I'm resigned to the crappy little weight bench with the broken headrest that's stuck in the corner. While they strut slowly from machine to machine, I skitter around like a mouse, trying to figure out where they're going so I can go to my next station. I just want to scream for him to pick a spot! Quit wandering around looking like you're going to do something! I don't give a fuck about the grunting and noises, just go with a plan so you can free up the machine for me.
I still go, because I'm that type of person, but I can totally see why people are intimidated by the gym. And also why you rarely see women in the weight room. It's not anything overt or confrontational, it's just uncomfortable. So no one listens to your gym complaints. Instead, we just stop going or at best, avoid the weight room. Neither of which is fair.
I encourage more women to lift weights. You aren't going to "bulk up" (it's not in our genes. You have to WANT to get that big and work toward it) You aren't going to get all manly (remember that estrogen thing? You have a LOT of it!) and even if you sweat or make noise, you can't possibly beat the guys in that department. Even if you're there to find a love connection, you really want the guy attracted to fit and strong You, trust me. And fit and strong comes with hard work lifting heavy stuff.
